This Fall’s second lecture: Inside the Golden Triangle: Opium to Coffee in Northern Thailand. M.R. Disnadda Diskul “Khun Chai”, Secretary General of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, will discuss sustainable development and education efforts for the local hill tribe villagers—a model of success now being duplicated around the world. Khun Chai previously served as Private Secretary of Her Royal Highness The Princess Mother—the mother of the current King of Thailand! He will be joined by Joseph Reagan, DEA Regional Director for Southeast Asia, who will discuss operations by DEA and the Royal Thai Police to end drug trafficking in Thailand over the past three decades.
This discussion will be moderated by Tritia Toyota, an award-winning broadcast journalist with more than 25 years in Southern California television news, and currently an Adjunct Asst. Professor of Anthropology and Asian American Studies at UCLA.

The Kingpin Strategy: Did it Work and is it Still Relevant?
Featuring former DEA Administrator Robert Bonner and the following panelists: Then-Chief of Major Investigations for DEA, Robert Nieves; Then-Assistant Administrator for Operations, Doug Wankel; and Then-Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice, Mary Lee Warren. The panel will explore the what, why, and how of the Kingpin Strategy, and touch on lessons learned for the current challenges facing DEA and the US government involving large, vertically integrated drug trafficking organizations, such as the Mexican drug cartels.

Deadly Chemistry: The Rise of Synthetic Drugs
The lecture will include three speakers on the subject of synthetic drugs. Dr. Ruben Baler, Health Scientist, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) will talk about the place of these synthetic drugs in the context of other psychoactive substances in terms of their chemistry and behavioral pharmacology. Lisa Pryor, DEA Group Supervisor, Tactical Diversion Squad will give a brief overview on Bath Salts and Spice, the effects of those drugs, and a few things learned in the field about how they are used. Robert Bell, DEA Staff Coordinator, Synthetic Drugs & Chemicals Section will provide an overview of synthetic designer drug trafficking and abuse, of difficulties designer drugs pose to law enforcement officials, and of DEA’s efforts to schedule designer drugs to address public safety issues.
